The Real Election Issues

Etienne Couture, Eng., President

November is right around the corner. While the RéseauIQ Board of Directors elections are in full swing, the municipal elections will also soon take place and their main issue is ethics. We are ever more tempted to stay in the warmth of our homes rather than go out in the seasonally cold temperatures, and also because of the extent of the scandals that are continually being sensationalized. Nevertheless, plan on taking a short walk on Sunday, November 1st to vote and choose your municipal leaders. Yes, it is the same date for all cities in Québec!

Clearly, the connections between our elected municipal officials and bidding companies are getting a lot of media attention. And since “investigative” reports pull in audiences, what begins as gossip becomes real issues! However, engineering consulting firms and construction companies are being singled out because of their closeness to our elected officials, which has the effect of putting the degree of ethics demonstrated by our politicians in the spotlight.

It is unfortunate, but there may not have been any other way to draw attention to the issue of ethics. This should also serve as a reminder to all engineers, whether they are closely involved or not in competitive bidding processes. Naturally, there are always just a few cases of enduring doubt that leave a mark. But it is worth your while to take some time to think about the ethical behaviour you must demonstrate in your business and relations. Vigilance is always wise.

Speaking of people who are involved in these municipal elections, there are no less than 9 engineer(s) who have decided to run for a position as a councillor or mayor in their region. Find out who they are by clicking here and let us know if we have forgotten any!

Finally, general cynicism or indifference toward politics is essentially rooted in the feeling that it is impossible for an individual to make a real difference. But that feeling can change every time a major issue arises. We must exercise our right to vote in order to keep our future and the democratic society that we have built closely linked. Don’t miss this opportunity to vote!
